I get friends to send me music from Limewire. But I don't want to Download Limewire because I don't want to get spyware. I hear that mp3 files can't carry viruses, is this true?

For the most part, this is true.

However, using steganographic techniques, you can encode any type of date into any type of file with minimal noticeable results.

To answer your question though, MP3 files are not self-executing, as in, the media player needs to read from the MP3 file. Unless the MP3 uses a security exploit in the media player (which is possible in Windows Media Player for instance), an MP3 file will be, for the most part, harmless to download.

No, the MP3 itself cannot contain a virus.

But using a program like Limewire increases the risks since you give partial access to your computer.

Another thing to be careful on is the complete file extension because you could download filename.mp3.exe which is a virus and since know extensions are hidden by default in Windows, you may just see filename.mp3 but it would show in the type and the icon.

When a new virus is written, it is sent out, either by email, or through a download on a website in most cases. A virus is a program, or it is embedded in a program (there are a few exceptions to this, such as macro viruses, but generally the rule holds). It cannot travel in a photo, or in an MP3 file, though a virus can be disguised to appear as one of those. You have to check the file extension to be sure - viruses can travel in .exe, .bat, or .com files. Usually they are in .exe files. For Mac or Linux, those extensions are different.
