It has been a strangely big year for flies - I even saw something on the Weather Network about it. Strange.

Here's what i did to drastically reduce the number of flies on my patio...

Go to the harware or garden centre and get a wasp trap. They are just plastic (although they come in glass too) containers with a hole in the bottom that you fill part way with liquid (I recommend orange pop - it's cheap and works really well) and then hang up somewhere on your porch.
The sweetness of the pop attracts flying insects into the trap and once inside they can't find their way out, because their natural instinct is to fly up (but the exit is down). They end up drowning in the pop and you just dump it out every few days.

You should notice a decrease in the number of flies around you in less than a week.

Good Luck!

The old fashioned remedy would be to put up fly paper.. Quite effective. There is also an herb called Tansy which i used to hang on my porch and it drove the flies away. You need to check the area around and under your porch to see if there is any garbage or animal poop that the flies are laying their eggs in. I also hate to mention this, but you could have a dead animal under the porch.

Very easy to get rid of fruit flies, and that is to get rid of the source (the fruit). The fruit flies come with the fruit, when you buy the,m, they then hatch while you have them sitting on the counter. YOur best bet is to buy enough fruit that will last you a day or two at aq time. Your first step is to get rid of the fruit you have right now, start with new fruit, and only buy enough for a few days. When you start to see the flies, throw it out. That will get rid of your problem, we had the same problem.

I heard that hanging up bunches of fresh garden mint will keep flies away. I tried it one year and it seemed to work on British flies!

Put out orange peelings, flies hate them. Also get a ziplock baggie and put water in side of it and zip it up firm, thump tack it over your doors, flies will not enter. Something about the vibration.
Hope it helps.............

Hang a clear plastic bag of water around the area and watch what happens to the flies:)...this is no joke

either a bug zapper...(not my choice because of the smell and the light and sound)......you could get those strips that you hang that attract them......place them in the corners so they are inconspicuous....or you could get one of those "silent" electronic devices that deter bugs of all kinds
