Originally, the division was political rather than economic: First World countries were the Western democracies (primarily Western Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, and a few others); Second World were the Communist countries (USSR and it's dependents), and Third World was all the countries that weren't aligned with either side. As time went on, it was noted that the Third World countries were mostly the poorer nations, and the term began to take on an economic connotation. Nowadays, while you still hear First World from time to time, the term Second World is almost never used. You sometimes might hear Fourth World, which doesn't have a constant definition but usually means a country that has no foreseeable chance of developing because of a lack of resources.

India is a 2nd world country like South Africa, and Indonesia.
3rd world countries are Iraq, East Timor, and Somalia.
