Poem for the Millions
June 30, 1975
They suffer pangs of hunger,
They shudder ‘neath the rain.
They are naked in the cold,
Their bellies wrench in pain.
They have no one to aid them
They are destitute, alone,
Their bodies breed diseases,
They’ve not the strength to moan.
They beg now for surcease
For an ending to the lives
That have brought them agony
And desperate futile strife.
They are dying now, good people
By the thousands, maybe more
As we eat our oyster stew
And are sure to bolt the door.
Entire populations
Rather quietly, it seems
Are leaving for dimensions
That we only know in dreams.
And in our world of bounty,
We will barely see them pass.
We’ll visit church each Sunday,
Will no one say them Mass?
Soon they’ll all be gone now
And more will take their place.
The world won’t even falter
In its rapid whirling pace.
But in our souls we’ll feel it
All the wrenching twisting death.
A part of us will die too;
We’ll be missing all the rest.
For we’re all of the same substance;
Blood and flesh and bone and fears.
And when one of us is writhing,
All the rest will share the tears.
