I think it started out as a celebration of All hallow's eve, which is the night before All Saint's day. The costumes are supposedly to scare off any spirits that might be about. It is mostly just a traditional holiday when the kids dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for "trick or treat". If you give them a treat a(candy) they won't pull any tricks on you. Some people feel that it is a satanic holiday, but I think it is mostly a time for kids to dress up and have fun. Some people do pull pranks, but it is mostly harmless stuff like throwing water balloons or toilet papering someone's house. Now days it's not really safe to go trick or treat from house to house especially in cities. Most people trick or treat at the mall or just at homes of people they know.

Halloween’s roots, although not found in the Bible, can be traced back to a pagan origin. The pre-Christian Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all celebrated a festival for the dead. These ancients believed that on these occasions the spirits of the dead returned; therefore food was left for them and lamps were kept burning so they would not lose their way.

Well, first off, it's fun. And relatively harmless. I mean, candy, dress-up and cool weather are all good things.
