I'm 31 and thinking about going to law school. I have three children and my wife works as a 4th grade teacher. I am an adminstrator at a private university. I've been thinking about going back to school and think I would enjoy law school. Is 31 too old to start?

Never too old as long as you are alive. Follow your dreams and desires.

I started law school at 38, and I'm now a happy and successful solo attorney.

So, no, it's not too late to start.

However... forget about enjoying Law School. It's irrelevant whether you enjoy it or not. What matters is whether or not having the degree will give you something important enough to endure Law School.

Scott Turow wrote a book called "One L" about his first year of Law School, it's a pretty good picture of what it's really like.

Have some serious talks with some attorneys about what being a lawyer is really like. It's not like TV at all, trust me on that.

edit: by the way... family considerations are important. There's a sort of "joke" among lawyers about Law School being a time of great sacrifice for the student's first wife.

Three years from now you'll be 34. That's not what can change.

What you can control is whether you'll be 34 with a law degree and a whole new future before you, or 34 without a law degree and the same old boring job you were tired of at 31.

Your choice.

Nobody "enjoys" law school. I graduated in 2002, and can unequivocally state that it wasn't any fun at all. The flip side is that I really love being a lawyer. My advice would be not to go unless you are sure you want to practice law. It is way too expensive and time-consuming to go because you would find it interesting.

You are never to old for school. You want to do something that is better for you and if it is law school you need to take that . I am 28, and I am in school now. I never once thought that I was to old for school. I have women and men in my class that are in their 40's and 50's and they are still holding in there. So, I think you should follow your dream and become a laywer because some innocent people out there need you.

Depends. Can you go to law school without sacrificing more time with your wife and kids? Can you do it without taking on debt or being a financial burden? If you can, then go for it.

I am in school now (2nd year evening) and am 29. Which is about the median for my class. I know of several fellow students that are in their mid 30's. My thinking is, if you want to do it, then do it!
