I've heard and read that, at least the Taoists (a.k.a. Daoists) would have it that the answer is, "nothing can hurt you".

Or at least that the implication is that you should live life fearlessly, *as if* you were utterly invincible.

Is this possible? Are we able to *be* invincible, and to live our lives this way? And if so, what are the implications and complications for human society? Or at the very least, the way us puny humans currently live?

The Taoist/Daoists are "naturalists". They are speaking to a "soft, civilized" society. It is their belief that a person who is hardened by the forces of nature cannot be harmed by anything in civilized society. They do not claim that they can survive the attack of a wild animal (a force of nature).

If you mean psychic or mental & emotional hurt, your feeling pain in response to whatever you are put through is almost always a choice. Or at the very least, this is true on a smaller scale, as in, when someone says or does something that hurts you (whether or not this applies to things like being attacked, living through war, I couldn't say, & wouldn't necessarily say it stands up to these rigors), but in the smaller things, you choose to get upset by them. No one else can hurt you, you are the only person who controls and decides how you will feel or respond. Unfortunately, knowing this & living it are QUITE different things.

Physical pain is a reality, we are really susceptible to physical pain. I think the Taoist is describing about psychological pain (emotions ). if we can understand that our psychological self is an illusion then, the Taoist is right, there is no emotional pain. Nothing can hurt you because there is no psychological you. The problem is how to discover that the psychological you is an illusion. It's up for you to find out.

You would first have to break down 'of this life'

Is a car of this life, as it is man made?

On what level? physically? No anything can hurt us that paper can hurt us, that carpet can hurt us (rug burn! - stingah!).

But spiritually?

Spiritually, we are able to be invincible. Nothing can hurt us spiritually, IF we so choose. WE decide how WE will react. Our body can be ripped, torn, bruised and broken (ouch), but our spirit CAN be untouchable therefore invincible.

But a lot of people choose to internalize a hurt or slight, and therefore anything CAN hurt you - if you choose.

...got that?

It is a pain just to being borne, haven't you seen a birth before, the pain starts then and doesn't end.
