A Hindu is a name coined to represent the people around the great Sind river province. In British India, any one other than the muslims and christians were termed as Hindu. In modern times, meaning of Hindu has changed - as sikhs, jains, buddhists in india don't call themselves as Hindus.
So now Hindu is one who has faith in Vedas, the deities glorified by the vedas, puranas and even provincial gods and goddesses (may not be found in vedas though). By belief, a hindu thinks the gods in other religion, even Jesus, Prophet Mohammad are one and the same and mere different type of manifestations.
An Indian by definition back in 1947 would have meant people living in Dakha, karachi, delhi, chennai anywhere. But now, it means the people who are citizens of the India (Bharat) alone.

You see, India was called India by the Britishers. It was actually Hindustan or Bharat. The word Hindu is derived from the river Sindhu or Indus. The people living by this river were called as Hindus. But now, Hindus are the people who follow Hinduism. Its long past meaning is lost now.
