I don't feel comfortable with my son staying over at my mother in laws house, because she doesn't have a smoke detector. I understand why she doesn't use one, because she has a wood stove, but I just don't feel safe. My husbands thinks that it is ok. My mother in law also doesn't have any electricity and no running water in the house. She uses a gas range and a generator also. I feel its to danerous for my son to stay there. What do you guys think?

Buy her a smoke detector. It may be wise to get one that also checks for carbon monoxide.

Buy her a battery smoke detector and put it far enough from the wood stove that it doesn't go off all the time. If that doesn't seem possible, just get over it. Your son will be fine.

She should not be deprived of access to her grandchildren because she is poor! Do you know that a generation ago NOBODY had smoke detectors, and most people survived just fine! Sure they are nice, but I wouldn't treat my child's grandmother like an outcast because she doesn't have one.

I wouldn't want my child staying there. My in-laws have a wood stove but they have a smoke detector. The no electricity and water would be a huge problem!
