I don't feel confortable with my son staying over at my mother in laws house, because she doesn't have a smoke detector. I understand why she doesn't use one, because she has a wood stove, but I just don't feel safe. My husbands thinks that it is ok. My mother in law also doesn't have any electricity and no running water in the house. She uses a gas range and a generator also. I feel its to danerous for my son to stay there. What do you guys think?

I think you should loosen up a little. Smoke detectors have only been available for about 20 years, so most of us (gasp) grew up in homes that didn't have them.

It sounds like your mother-in-law is very poor, but that is not a good reason to keep your son away from her. Can you and your husband help her get running water at least? That is much more important than a smoke detector. Yes, smoke detectors save some lives, but we hear about all those cases because they get hyped in the paper and on TV. But mankind did fine without them until a relatively short time ago. I sure didn't have one in the house I grew up in, and you probably didn't either. Let your son visit grandma! You can send a battery-operated smoke detector with him to put next to his bed if that will make you feel better.

How about this... buy her one! I am sure you can put it far enough away from the stove that it shoudn't be a problem.
