A Rebel is NOT suitable for a 6'1" rider. They're so small you are going to feel very uncomfortable on one. The Suzuki GZ250 is a bit less tortureous, but still not ideal for someone your height.

There's nothing wrong with starting on a 250, but there are only a few of these that can accomodate a tall rider. The only options I've ever seen in a showroom are the Kawasaki Ninja 250 and the Hyosung GV250 cruiser. The Honda CB250 Nighthawk also has room for tall riders, but it's hard to find one and they come with a horrible front drum brake.

Here is a great collection of pictures of a guy your height sitting on bikes that make good choices for a first time buyer:

He's done a great write-up of his impression of how the various bikes feel.

As a general rule, it seems the best bikes for taller beginners tend to be either dual sports (sort of like street legal dirt bikes) or a bit more sporty than the typical cruiser.

Look at bikes with bigger engines. 250s get very boring, very fast. Your height will make the 250s seem very small. Look for something in the 600-750 bracket.

Get a Honda Shadow 750 Aero with the shaft drive. Sweet ride....

If it's really between these two, get the taller one. Haven't sat on a GZ, but I'm 5"11" and the Rebel makes me kiss my knees when I'm on it!

Perhaps you should look at a larger bike?
