Or does it have to be fantastic to warrant a tip? What makes you absolutely refuse to tip? And if you see that a tip is included in the charge do you deduct it if the service isn't any good?

I always leave a tip and the better the service the bigger the tip.
I would be too embarrassed to deduct the tip if I got terrible service

If the service is good and you can afford that little spare cash, why not? It may just make the day for that first time part-timer! The best service comes with sincerely welcoming smiles. As long as you can see they tried and you enjoyed your time there, it is fantastic enough to me.
What would make me absolutely refuse to tip them is if the food doesn't taste as good as advertised, the proportion is stingy and the waiter dump you in a far corner and only cleaned the table when you asked for your bills.
Usually they give you some envelop or this little black-leather book-cover kind of thing with the bill clipped inside. Usually after you've paid the full amount they would pass the the book thing back to you with the receipt in place and I'd leave my tip there because after we left they would collect it back. Yupp.

Yes I leave a tip for good service, but I want it to be at my discretion. I always leave what I consider to be a reasonable amount and definitely don't go along with the 10% rule.
If the service charge is included in the total bill then I won't leave anything extra. Likewise poor service results in no tip.

This is what I do.... tip 10% for a good service. 15% for really good service and then I just round it up for service which was passable. If i dont like i wont give....simple as that. Why should people be rewarded for bad service. If service is included dont tip - how much do they want?? if it's included and i dont think it's deserved (which happened once!?) i told the management and they deducted half. Got to be done....

People might hate me/slate me for this but..... I tip people who give very good service and only them. I hate this culture of everyone gets a tip of 10% and if they are good you give them more than that. There are many minimum wages jobs and waiters are just one of them so they don't deserve more sympathy than anyone else.

A tip, by the nature of it, is meant to be a bonus. So I use it as such. If you serve me well, you will get at least 10%. If you don't, don't expect to be given anything extra. You work in a service industry, learn to serve.

And no, I'm not overly picky, I'm not mean, I tip most people and tip well but I just think that it should be my own decision to do so!

(And I live in the UK so maybe this doesn't apply in the US cos I know they tip EVERYONE ALL THE TIME!!)

I always leave a tip and the better the service the bigger the tip.

One of the things that I have learmed though is to always tip in cash, never add it on to your credit card payment as the waiter/ess may not get the tip.

I have heard horror stories where the tips recieved via credit cards are used to make their wages up to the minimum wage and others where they don't get the tips at all!!!

Yes I leave a tip if the service has been good.
What makes me refuse to tip?
When theres a mandatory 'service' charge on the bill.
I mean how do they know how much I was prepared to give?

The only restaurant that me and my wife eat at in town does not do any of this underhand shenanigans and they excel themselvess at taking pride in there food and excellent service.
Plus there very competitively priced as well!

Waiting on tables is a poorly paid job and the only way a good waiter(ess) can get the money they truly deserve is through customers showing their appreciation by tipping. The amount is discretionary although 10% is the accepted norm in this country. It could also be seen I suppose as a way of ensuring good service as it should make even a sloppy waiter by nature pull his socks up when he sees others getting more than him. Although as I said I prefer to see it as the best way of showing your appreciation.

I usually leave the standard 10% tip - if the service has been good, if it's been outstanding then a bit more if it's been not so good less, and if it's been awful - well i liek to leave 50p rather than nothing is more insulting! I find it really anooying when they add the tip automatically - they are assuming their staff are very good when often they are not!

I think all the yes answeres have been put in by waiters , i say no tip , if you dont like the wages then dont do the job , why should you be expected to give somebody more money just for doing their job , you dont give the bus driver extra just cos he gets you where you want to go or the train driver for doing the same etc etc .Millionaire restuarant owners like Gordon Ramsey Rick Stien etc etc should be footing the bill not us diners .
