It wasn't made to get gas mileage, it was made to look good and go fast. New filters, good tuneup, front end alignment, good thermostat, be sure the brakes aren't dragging, slow acceleration from stops, lots of coasting when possible, no long idling, proper tire inflation. If it is old enough to have a carb, find someone who knows how to adjust it. Don't carry any extra weight in the car. This is all you can do without spending money for different rear gears or an overdrive transmission.
