Currency is as old as civilization. Fiat currency (money with no inherent value) requires common acceptance in order for it to be useful. You also need to trust the agency producing the currency for it to be useful.

At present, the dollar and the euro are basically international currencies. They are accepted in many countries regardless of the local currency. A single currency may be easier, but it requires nations forfeiting monetary control which could be serious (depending on how important you feel monetary policy is).

Actually the concept of money was started by the cave men. They would trade animal hides for food. There are so many different currency's now because there are different countries. No it would not be better to have one currency. Some nations have a better economy than others so their money is worth more.
