We moved here to Fort Drum in the middle of November last year and it was already snowing, but people told me the snow came late that year. Anyone been in this area longer then a year know when it usually starts for the winter?

Buffalo's storm was due to lake effect snow - I want to know when it comes and stays until April. We didnt see any of the snow that hit Buffalo last week thats why I was wondering when it starts.

I am originally from Upstate New York. The distinction between Upstate And Downstate depends on where you are from. If you live in the City, anything North of Yonkers is considered Upstate. If you live Upstate, the Northern Edge of WestChester County is considered Downstate. It's a designation because most residents of New York State have "New York City" and "Not New York City" The average guy in Idaho or wherever doesn't understand that there's a lot more to New York State than Concrete and Skyscrapers. There's actually places that are worth living other than the worlds largest cesspool.

starts to snow? regularly? in mid-november. That's when the temps are routinely low enough that precip arrives as snow. However this begs the question of when is there actually snow on the ground. While we sometimes have snow on thanksgiving we usually see the bare ground a couple more times before the real blanket shows up in mid-december. If thanksgiving snow ends up staying on the ground for the duration that's an early winter in my book.

I live in buffalo my whole entire life(32years) and it really depends on the lake, because we pretty much get all the snow from it since i just went thru the October storm and just got my power back and lost all my trees the clean up is terrible but anyways we usually get snow around the end of November till Feb-march. but like i said it depends on the lake if it isn't frozen expect more but if it is frozen expect less.. don't worry about the snow its alot of fun when your used to it..plus its a beautiful place to live besides the taxes

and we had 26" of snow to be exact heavy to what a pain but its almost gone

It can start snowing any time from Mid October to November first; I've lived in Utica for 17 yrs and we amost always have snow before Holloween; and then there are times we don't have snow until just before Thanksgiving, but once it starts snowing you will have a blast doing all the winter things like-snowmobiling,sking, sleding, and ice skating and of course there is the adventure of driving on snow and black ice. Good luck with your adventure in the North.

Depends. I'm not sure where Ft. Drum is located, but I grew up in NE New York (North of Albany), and we would usually get our first snowfall anywhere from the end of October through the end of November. The first snowfall was't usually too big and didn't really accumulate, but it was still a snowfall. Usually we didn't get any real accumulation until like mid to late november, or possibly into late december, if it was a warmer winter.

You are in an area of NY which is prone to heavy snow loads. It can vary, but you can probably expect 6-10 ft. of snow. The storm in buffalo was a fluke, I live 25 mi. west of Albany, and in 1987 we had a similar storm on Oct. 4th. Don't let that storm freak you out. Good luck, Spring is coming.

Well, I lived Upstate NY For over 20 years. I can assure you snow fall usually falls mid November, but this year, they already had their first snow fall. So I guess it depends on whats going on with the rest of the world, (weather wise).
