The muscles tighten (essentially shrink lengthwise), yanking (via tendons) various bones about. Other muscles constantly hold things in tension so we can stand, etc. and not fall around.
The way the muscles work on a molecular level is absolutely amazing, you should read about it!
Ligaments hold bones to bones for general support.
Fascia, like tough thin sheets, hold all of it together too.
Or so I'm told...

Hi Yellowjeff is right. The other aspect is that nerves control the muscles in an ordered fashion to coordinate movements of the various groups of muscle. Grab your wrist and move your fingers. The muscles will be felt.

The muscles are attached to the bones with tendons. When you want to move, nerves from the brain create an impulse on that muscle and when the muscle moves, so does the bone hence casuing you to move.
