French, Italian, Portugeese and Spanish are language which belong to the same language group called latin or roman languages. As Roman empire was holdong all these teritories at a time, once, people in the empire talked Latin, then a living language and ligua franca of those times. (The Roman group of languages belongs to Indó-European language group, where you can find also Anglo-Saxon languages, Slavic language group, Sanscrit, etc.)
in Arts there is a ody tipe of man, called latin tipe. Ir can be more applied to the look tipical of mediteranina man tipe. So word Latin is used not for Latin america, but it can be an ecpression for other things in the mediteranina cultures.
Countries from the latin language groups (Spain, Portugal)concered the theritories of the today's Latin America...so then it is easy to imagine why this America is Latin.
Hope this helps

Latin America is the region of the Americas where Romance languages — those derived from Latin — are officially or primarily spoken.
Originally a political term, Amerique Latine was coined by French emperor Napoleon III, who cited Amerique Latine and Indochine as goals for expansion during his reign. While the term helped him stake a claim to those territories, it eventually came to embody those parts of the Americas that speak Romance languages initially brought by settlers from Spain, Portugal and, in a minor extent, France in the 15th and 16th centuries. An alternate etymology points to Michel Chevalier, who mentioned the term in 1836.
In the United States, the term was not used until the 1890s, and did not become a common descriptor of the region until early in the twentieth century. Before then, Spanish America was more commonly used.

If they called it "Spanish America" then the "Portuguese" might get upset. Since Spanish and Portuguese make up the languages of South America, it would only be fair to say "Latin America" since these languages came from Latin.

Much of the spanish language is derived from latin, like italian and french. Sometimes they are called romance languages. Romans spoke latin, so ROMANce... get it? Lot of people in South America speak portuguese.. so that is why we don't just call it spanish america.

Because Spanish is a language derived from Latin (a "Romance" language - referring to Rome). It sure was Teutonic America until around WW II. Now it is Communist America. Chavez and Castro have ruined it.

Spanish is a romance language, which is a language derived from latin. Now, why italians and the french aren't ALSO called latin, is beyond me. Good question.
