What individualists? do you mean Gothic people, because they aren't all that individualistic. they all look the same and act a lot alike too.
Like the shirt that says "you laugh because I look different, I laugh because you all look the same" I saw ten of those shirts one day. yes on different people.
What I'm saying is that i haven't seen any individualists. I'm guessing you wouldn't know one if you saw one.

I value being an individual, but you can't really show it. You can only live it. I think I do and nobody has looked down upon me for it. and if they did.....screw 'em

It's very important to be yourself. American society does look down on individualism, but the free thinkers are the ones that change us the most. (look at Steve Jobs or Bill Gates!)
Part of being unique is believing in yourself and not really caring what everyone else thinks. It's much more fun to be a misfit rather than a mindless member of the herd. Sheeps are creeps!

WOW that's a hard one. I suppose it's a bit of hypocrisy. Individualism is condoned by society as a whole as long as it's along certain lines, like academic or financial success.

On and individual level, if one is very different from others, one tends to stick out and make others uncomfortable; you show them things about themselves they'd rather not see. It may make people feel inadequate or uncomfortable.

So society approves, but people disapprove. No wonder we're neurotic.

Some places (famously California) have a culture that is more accepting of this than others. In CA you're a misfit if you *aren't* weird.

The trait I value most in my friends is that they accept me for who I am.

I don't think we condone individualism so much as personal freedom; the personal freedom to choose to participate.
