Ok here is the deal I am 30 years old and the father of 2 boys and a girl. My wife had made mentions that she wanted to be a girl scout leader and she suggested that I be a boy scout leader. I was quick to shot the idea down not because I didn’t really want to but because I haven’t a clue as to how to be a scout leader seeing how I never was a boy scout and I don’t know what they require for experience in that area. Well as I have sat here and thought about it I have noticed more and more the impotence of it to her and I guess I will start here as asking any of you that may be scout leaders what it really takes to be one and whether I had to be a boy scout in order to be a leader.

Please help!!

There are many Scout leaders who were never a Scout as a boy, so this shouldn't discourage you. The Scouting program offers a lot of training, some that can be done online, and others that are presented by local volunteers. A good place to start would be to call your local Boy Scout Council (locate it at www.scouting.org) and call them. The program that you will be involved in depends on the age of your boys. Cub Scouting is for boys from grades 1-5, Boy Scouting for boys from grade 6-age 18, and Venturing for boys and girls from age 14-20. There is online training called "Fast Start" that you can find in the training section of most Council's web sites. There is also an online youth protection training. Register through a local Scout unit (Cub Scouts are "Packs" Boy Scouts are "Troops" and Venture Scouts are "Crews") which will cost $10 per year. Then attend your local training sessions. There are typically many volunteers who will help you. Don't be shy about asking questions. Good Luck and Good Scouting.

The Best way to become a scout leader is to go talk to your local Boy Scout Council, they are always looking for volunteers, why your at your council headquarters pick up the Boy Scout Hand Book and the Scout Leaders Hand Book an go from there, My self I had a little scout training when i was young an ended up with two Step sons who I encouraged to join the scouts an got in voled as a assistant Scout Leader at the same time, an in six months I took over the troop, as was there leadedr for 4 years, You will not regret it Lots of Luck

Find a local troop which meets at a time convient to you (if your boys already belong, start there), attend a meeting and talk with the scout master to tell him you would like to volunteer. You will start out as an assistant, but can advance if you want. It will take training.
