It depends on what you want to do with your website. The benefits of hosting are that it is cheaper, you don't have to administer it yourself and usually they try to make hosting plans simple so anyone can do them. So if you are planning on setting up a website and you can find a hosting company that can do everything you need it to do than you can save a lot of money and headache going that way.
The benefits of going with your own server is that you have complete control over the server. You can add any applications that you might need and remove anything that you don't.
Of course with having your own web server you must than decide where you will put it. If you need to put your server in a datacenter or if you just run it from your house.
For most people putting up a website a hosting service works great. That is the route I would suggest if you are only planning on doing a website and nothing more.

A server is Architecture. All Computers are servers, but a dedicated server is designed to do just that. A Server could run from $500-$80,000, depending on your needs. A web host is a set of servers that sell there time, resources and bandwidth. Smaller companies opt for the server hosted websites, Corporations, some, use Onsight Servers and have an IT staff to maintain them.
If your ISP allows you 20mb of storage and 1g bandwidth every month, and your sight takes off and gets 500 hits a day, you could exceed your limit and the sight will be taken down. It is doable, certainly, but to have a PC on 24/7 and activeley serving a site is very risky.

You only need a Domain Name (~$8/year) and web hosting (~$7/month).
If you are starting a business, I'd suggest going this route. Check out http://www.lunarpages.com
They offer free domain names with your web hosting orders.
You want to look at two things:
1) Storage Space
2) Bandwidth
Larger and cheaper the better.

You can get a web hosting company that you can upload your files to. You do not need your own server. Try to search for web hosting.

You need to set up a different root directory for each domain, and configurations for each domain on the server. This will probably mean moving the existing domain into a subfolder first, and re-configuring the initialisation file. You will then need to point the domain reistrar's dns A, PTR and CNAME records to point to the hosting machine.
