It could be one of the following:New cycle , that is the irregularity experienced by some young girls at the onset of the periods. Their cycle can be irregular for months or years whilst it is establishing itself. Dietary problems , eg anorexia, bulimia or simply poor diet,Too much exercise ,Drugs - prescription and recreational,Break in routine ,Thoughts and emotions ,Sexual activity - especially when it is a new occurrence,Anxiety about pregnancy ,Illness or physiological imbalance eg thyroid conditions.

I know exactly how you feel I had this problem for 2 years you might wish for your doctor to refer you to a gynacologist to see if their is anything wrong, I consulted a female doctor who was that unsympathetic, she asked me why was I bothered about this, after numerous tests, she said my hormone level was a bit higher than normal but nothing to worry about. She gave me a pill that would stop my periods for 3 weeks and to see if that would regulate me. After I came off the pills I had a really bad period in which I had bad stomach cramps, kept being sick, bleed that much I went thought 10 sanitary towels in one night, I called NHS Helpline they told me it was coming off the pills. I seeked advise from a pharmacist to take Well Woman which is natural herbal pill that looks after your immune system and total well being, it contains star flower oil and evening primrose oil to help maintain a healthy hormone balance plus Iron to help blood formation, my periods are now regular . If the doctors are no help you might want to try this or even try this before you go to the doctors, but if it does not work seek advice at the doctors You can pick up this product at Boots, Superdrug or at www.wellwoman.com.

You've gotten some good other answers, but is it possible that you were pregnant? When someone has a m/c, it can cause bleeding for an extended period of time. Go to the doctor's office, whether you could have been pregnant or not. While some irregularity is "normal" for teens, I am almost sure that one that lasts this long is not. I wish you the best.

Adding: I'm only asking this because it's very possible to have not even known you were pregnant and lost the pregnancy - it's very common.

Your Doctor is the best person to go to for advice. You could be anaemic and just need some iron tablets. I was the same but used to look on the bright side - more time between periods so less periods per year than others. If you go on 'the pill' remember that all tablets have adverse side effects. My periods settled down after my first child born - and I'm NOT telling you to have a baby which will tie you down while your friends are still able to go out and enjoy themselves. Hope you get sorted.

Please don't worry!

My periods were all over the place when I was a teenager, so I went to the doc and went on the pill - not as a contraceptive but as a way to control my crazy periods!

It really helped - the pain was less, I was regular and not as heavy.

I did try coming off the pill but after 8 months found that I still had the erractic periods, so am back on it now, and it's really helped me.

I hope this helps and you can find some relief!

Hi,

Yes it sound to me like your periods are irregular, this sounds like a simple hormone imbalance, have you suffered stress recently. If you do not ovulate for a few months.periods can last longer because your body has to discharge those eggs.Nevertheless if this carries on then isuggest you see your local doctor,he may prespribe the pill to regulate you.It is quite common to have irregular periods at your age,i did..but it is not comfortable at all...go and have a chat with your doctor anyway because you may become anemic throught blood loss over that amount of time..(3 wks)..and you must be feeling tired.Put your feet up and stop worrying love.

bye for now..Janine.27rs

When you are in your teens, it's normal to be "abnormal" when it comes to your periods.

But, three weeks is a long time. I doubt it has anything to do with your fertility, but I think you need to call your doctor. They will probably check your iron count and make sure you're not anemic. And, they may put you on birth control to make your periods less heavy and more regular.

Hi D-

If anything you could just need to be regulated..However it is always a good idea to talk to your doctor as this could be something simple that they can give you a prescription for..Women are different.some flow light, some heavy, some not hardly..Do not look at this as the end of the world ok? just relax and go and see what they say.

good luck

hi, sorry about that. one cause could be if you are on a contreceptive pill which may not suit your body, another, you are on pill and only take it irregularly. your family planning doctor will help. also, but unlikely so soon, inflammation of the wall of the womb, this is also painful, either way, if you loose blood onn this regular basis, be sure and do not get anaemia, a nice doctor can fix the matter, lol.

At your age, a three week period needs investigating. go to your Doctor and and get him/her to give you a blood test and an examination. if you are not satisfied with the answer then ask for a second opinion. Get someone to go with you (an Adult) and don't take no for an answer. be truthfull with all your answers and your doctor will be able to help.
take care.

This is not normal. It's most likely a hormone imbalance in someone of your age, but you really need to see a doctor for more tests. Besides anything else, bleeding for this length of time can cause you to become anaemic.
