Only if we choose to think that way. You could say that bad things happen to all of us, and that we are helpless in the face of forces (politics, media, marketplace...) beyond our ability to change them. This is true, but we can decide to think about the positive things that are in our lives as well. We can also effect some change even on a small scale. I don't have to sit quietly while injustice is done- I can send an email, make a call, decide to stop buying products made by irresponsible companies, say out loud to the powers that be "not in my name'- all these things have a little impact if done by a few, but a lot if we all refused to be silent victims and speak out.
