Normally a bone of contention, however recently came across the Johnny Cash cover of Depeche Mode' "Personal Jesus". Personally i think it is a good version and in some ways better than the original.

A few more that spring to mind as better than the original.
Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson ( Simon and Garfunkel original )
Muse - Feeling Good ( Nina Simeone )
ASH - Hit me baby one more time ( Britney "looks like shite, trailer trash" Spears )

So my question is what covers have worked for you, and perhaps you can recommend some as well ?

The definitive cover version for me is Jeff Buckleys cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" That song and his singing never fails in getting me teary eyed.

I personally like The Boy Least Likely's cover of George Michaels "Faith" turned into a country tinged, banjo played slow tempo track with handclaps & Xylophone, which in theory should not work, but ... Its a brilliant track. Also U2's Cover of Cole Porter's "Night & Day" is stunning, and there's so many more...

I have to disagree with you however on Muse's cover of Feeling Good. Nina's the best ever, and Muse Where quite brave in tackling that song. Even though its brilliant its definately not Nina's version.

A couple of my favorites...

Ain't That a Shame - Cheap Trick (Fats Domino)
The Loco-Motion - Grand Funk Railroad (Little Eva)
I Shot the Sheriff - Eric Clapton (Bob Marley)
Get Ready - Rare Earth (Temptations)
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)

hounds of love - futureheads, originally by kate bush is a good cover. i think most good covers are the ones that try something different with the song. Anyone could just sing it again. Hallejuah by lenard cohen covered by Jeff Buckley is also a good cover, very haunting and emotional. Most Reel Big Fish covers are worth a listen aswell cos they put a different slant on things.

personally speaking, the most fun cover my band do is 'I Get Along - The Libertines'. Its what rock and roll should be all about. loud, fast, fun and foul mouthed.

I really like the Chili Peppers version of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground. Even though it's already funky they put a bit of rock into it aswell.

Speedway - Genie In a Bottle
Happy Mondays - Step on
No Doubt - It's my life
Marvin Gaye - I heard it thorugh the grapevine.

On the whole covers don't add anything, and most of the time make me shudder as i think "Who's wrecking this?"
