I've just looked at the Royal Mails website and they only seem to do surface mail upto 2kg, and it would still cost about £35.
I can't divide the item into 2 x 2kg parcels - anyone got any serious answers?

A racing pigeon can carry up to 100g. They can cover enormously long distances, and you do not specify anything about speed! As the parcel cannot be sub-divided, that would imply the use of 40 racing pigeons. There is a need to build in redundancy, for at the limit, if one pigeon died then the load would be too much for the rest. Therefore I would propose the use of at least 50 pigeons, trained to fly where you want the parcel to go, arranged in a series of loose harnesses, and (of course) released simultaneously!

I have the same problem. Anything above 2KG is really expensive. Try looking on the Parcel Force web site ,I think it says that you can pay extra for each 20g over 2kg but it still works out very expensive. There might also be a box you can fill in on the site and it calculates a number of different prices.
THIS IS WHAT I MEAN.

If there is any way at all of splitting it down into 2 or more under 2kg each, then Post Office Small packet rate should be cheaper
Sorry, I just checked. I'm wrong, it would be about £19.50 for 2kg.

I think you have found the cheapest option. Below is a link to the parcel force website and it works out about £60. Stick with the post office.

2 for the price of 1:
Silly answer: Pump it full of helium until it weighs 2kg, then send it royal mail.

Sensible answer: try http://www.interparcel.com/ who will probably charge about £40-50.
