I was wondering if this was true after I saw a question by another asker. For instance, do people at your company get the same amount of PTO than people w/out kids? What about non-paid time?

I was asking b/c I probably won't have kids, but I will most likely have to take care of my aging parents.

Thanks!

Sway, that is sad. I had a feeling that was happening. I guess I'll just have to make up some imaginary kids in case I ever get sick

AT MY PLACE EVERYBODY GETS 1 MONTH PAID VACATION. 8 SICK DAYS, 4 PERSONAL DAYS AND THE MANAGEMENT IS VERY RELAXED. LIKE SWAY IF WE HAVE TO LEAVE EARLY THEY DON'T SAY ANYTHING. IF YOU HAVE A DEATH IN THE FAMILY YOU GET A WEEK BEREAVEMENT TIME THAT DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS YOUR VACATION OR ANYTHING ELSE. IF YOU HAVE SICK FAMILY MEMBERS LOOK INTO THE FAMILY ACT.

Synopsis of Law
Covered employers must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for one or more of the following reasons:

for the birth and care of the newborn child of the employee;
for placement with the employee of a son or daughter for adoption or foster care;
to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition; or
to take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition.

At my company, we all get the same number of sick, personal, and vacation hours (vac based on yrs of service). We can use vacation and personal for whatever we want and sick can be used for immediate family (parents, siblings, kids, spouse). You can also take an unpaid leave of absence for family medical (and you could get an unpaid leave approved for really anything).

While this is a large organization and it differs from dept. to dept., people are not allowed to leave without using PTO. However, most supervisors are generally understanding of any need to leave, kids or not.

At my comapny we all get the same number of days PTO depending on how long we have been with the company, but if someone who needs to leave early or something for their kids, our bosses look the other way and they dont have to use their PTO. But if I have to leave early for a doc appointment or if I am sick or anything, I have to use my PTO, even if it is just a few hours.
