I was under the impression that the EU was a grouping mainly for economic reasons for the improvement of all of the member nations, so I cannot really see what relevance a country's religion has to do with anything, especially as there are hundreds and thousands of Turkish people living and working all over Europe. So yes, I would agree with you, in fact I think that if Turkey is excluded because of religion it would be the worst form of discrimination.

On the subject of Turkish Muslims, i have lots of Turkish friends and find them 1000 times more tollerant (dare i use that word?) of non muslims over there than British muslims are here.
In fact, i've never had a single problem there regarding something important to them such as eating during Ramadam or the much smaller things that has the muslims here screaming in the streets.
They are a very friendly and accepting people, willing to accept diffrences and understand that not all people belive what they do.
I spend months there every year and have nothing but respect for Turkish people, i have done my utmost to ensure i did nothing to offend them and they are willing to meet all nationalities and religions half way or just agree to disagree.
Why can't the Muslims of this country do that?
There are issues regarding them joining the EU, Cyprus would be a big one for me after seeing what happened there, but i would rather have Turkey come in than some of the other countries waiting in the wings.

I personally think Turkey should not join the EU. What is the point joining a common market who is going to make the country change its political views, dictate what the Turkish government says or does. The funniest thing is some western countries like France, UK, Greece are trying to blackmail Turkey using Armenia and Cyprus to join the EU. The hell with the EU!

Turkey has it's problems both, socially, economically and has a bad human rights record. Then again, look at who has just been allowed in to the E.U.
Turkey is also a ferociously secular nation and to bar it from the Union on the basis of Religious leanings is churlish. But what do you expect from the Pope, or most other so-called leaders of faith?
However the E.U. is a bloated, nepotistic, corrupt, pointless organisation with so little to do with itself that all it can do is make inept, stupid rulings on matters that even local government would not bother with. Maybe Turkey would be better off without it.

That's ridiculous. Bringing Turkey into the EU could help bridge the gaps between Christians and Muslims. Besides, Turkey has always had a secular government.
The Pope has no say in it and it's really about time to shut his mouth before he gets more people killed. Loved the last pope - this guy? Not so much.

I can't think why they shouldn't join. If all the countries must ALL be the same in a group then no-one would ever want to travel. The UK use a different currency to the rest of the EU and they are still allowed to be in the EU, and yet they are different too. The pope is always insulting other religions. He'll become really unpopular one day.

For heavens sakes this Pope really is beyond the pale!
Keep Religion out of politics, and politics out of religion!
There is no earthly reason (or heavenly reason either for that matter) why Turkey or anybody else (except the USA) should not join the EEC!
The more the better I say, and let's celebrate our differences as well as our commonalities!
Jenny; this is a GLOBAL COMMUNITY! This is not an Americans only web site; I for one am an Englishman living in Italy.

I believe that the religion doesn't matter since you believe that there is only one God.Anyway the Catholics are a bunch of gutless,old...hmm,excuse me.EU should accept Turkey because it is a free EUROPEAN country and since most of the countries of Europe are in the EU. So,yes,Turkey should join the EU,no matter what the Pope and any other man of the Church thinks.

Oh I think the key factor is the wearing of the fez. Some may think this trivial ,but anyone who remembers the comedian Tommy Cooper will know that it is not. Do any of us know anyone serious who wears a fez? If, indeed, fez-wearing is directly related to comedic tendencies, then we could have a nation of comedians at the gates of Europe.
This might not sound alarming, but we are not talking about 1 or 2, or even a dozen! We now worry about floods of immigrants, but I warrant that anxiety will fade into nothing as a torrent of humorists rolls across the West!
We won't be laughing then...

I don't really like this new pope. I think he is causing more harm than good. He is supposed to bridge the gap between faiths. I would not listen to any of the bullcrap that comes out of his face. I am Catholic and believe that Turkey should have equal rights to join E.U. There is no reason for the contrary. SHAME ON HIS RACIST MIND!!!
