I use a generic no name brand of detergent. Why? Because it is usually the same as those blended for Tide and such. As far as suds go they are not necessary for effective washing..it just means there are more phosphates and less surfactants in the chemistry. Increased suds were fashioned in the 50's and 60's as a visual way for housewives to see there clothes washing. You can actually wash with no suds at all. Phosphates , however , are bad for the envirronment.

I used to use Oxydol, but I had a serious sewer backup, and Roto-Rooter told me it was because I used powdered detergent. So I switched to liquid Tide because it was the easiest to find at Sam's Club. I guess I never switched to anything else...it does a great job!

Tide High Efficiency. It works well, I like the smell, and is made just for my High Efficiency washer and dryer. I like the Tide with Downy scents better, but they do not yet make a High Efficiency version. Arm and Hammer is also a very good brand if you do not have a high efficiency washer and dryer.
