There is a switch on the shifter the should only allow the car to be started in Park. Sounds as if the switch is out of adjustment or broken. Ask you favorite mechanic.

She does the right thing.
Ask her to apply hand breaks befour starting and release it when she goes in 1st gear, since the car may not be in neutral and would bang anything in front,if there is something..
Good driving needs 6th sence.

It's an automatic, SKG!

Does it crank in Park, or nothing at all??

If nothing, and it works in neutral, then it is the switch. It may have one switch for both P and N, or individual ones.

Because Hyundais suck. My dad had one and it was such a lemon. He got it new, so straight from the factory they suck. Tell your sister that I feel for her. But she should be lucky that that piece of junk even starts!
