1) What are the core features you are looking for?? List the must haves (processor (speed, dual/single core, FSB, 32bit or 64 bit, etc), memory, hard drive, cd and/or dvd, connections (USB2.0, firewire, digital audio)

2) What is the most you are willing to spend for the above features?

3) Try the online sites for Dell, HP, Gateway plus NewEgg.com and try cyberpowerpc.com for a custom build that is only a little more expensive than do-it-yourself.

Since you can get online, google for PCs. The basic PCs. are all about the same--they all buy parts from the same suppliers--so it depends on what you want in addition to just the basic PC.
Unless you have lots of money, go for the best price, eMachines or Acer, etc. Our old PC gave out a month ago and I got a basci Acer with XP for $400 at Staples. But you can do somewhat better buy buying online. By the way, most stores that sell computers don't have them in stock to take home with you, but order them and they are shipped to your home, no differnt than if you bought online.
Also, check local store via phone and buy over phone. No need to go into the store unless you want to.
Good luck.

Hello,
Personally i would build a computer but if you would prefer to buy one then you should look out for the following:
1) Make sure it has a decent RAM (Random Access Memory) this is the speed of which your computer runs. Most people only need about 512mb ram, but if you are into gaming which i am you would be doing best with 2gb ram.
2) Hard drive - make sure that the hard drive is of decent quality and make sure it is of a good capacity preferably 80gb is plenty for a first timer.
3) Screen - you need a decent screen which is most important you can have an LCD, CRT whatever you choose.
4) Processor: Realy you would only need a Pentium 4 processor but you can have a dual core procesor, single core processor AMD processor. But you would be best off with a Pentium 4 Processor with 2.80 - 3 gigahertz processing speed.

The new macs are enticing as they advertise to be less prone to viruses, but you need to remember that if you're going to run Windows on it, it will then be the target of viruses.

Right now, I would look for a 64-bit machine that is Vista compatible. The new software that will be coming out will require Vista and the 64-bits to fully enjoy the benefits of the software.

Old software should still work, but simply won't be as fast as the new, as they cannot take advantage of the hardware improvements.

So, 64-bit, lots of RAM (1GB or more), DVD-RW, and talk to knowledgeable sales staff about what software you run.

Read and build your own. You can build your own computer that will perform 100% than store bought computers and pay less for it than the top of the line store bought computer. I've not priced lately but I bet you could build a top of the line computer with all the bells and whistles for $900. Then when you get it done and go out and buy a program you know 100% sure you'll be able to run it.
