I recently send alloy.com a very small check in payment for some merchandise. The merchandise was no longer in stock so my order was cancelled. They did not cash the check however they will not return the check to me. Are they supposed to return the check if they are not going to use it? Or should I just correct my checkbook and not worry about it?

They should return the check. It can be cashed from your checking account usually up to 6 months from the date it was issued. That puts you at risk unless you pay (around $15) for a stop payment on it.

I don't understand why they woudn't return the check unless they processed the check. If they won't return your check they should send you a refund. Most companies won't process the order until they receive a cleared payment. You need to verify what they did and check with your bank to make sure it wasn't cashed. Speak to a manager at the company if you need to. If they didn't process your check then they have no reason not to send it back.

Well, you could just call your bank and have them stop payment on the check. At my bank, that costs $25.00. If that's more than your check was for, I wouldn't do that. You could just carry on, as if they did cash the check, then go back and correct your checkbook after 120 days. But, just in case, I would leave enough money in the bank to cover the check. Not that they are going to cash it later, but just in case.

They are to return the check. Just to be sure, you may want to call your bank and put a 'stop payment' block on that check.

if you don't get the merchandise then you certainly should be able to get your money back in some way. It might be store credit or something, but they can't keep your money and keep the merchandise. You need to do something about it and bug them until they help you out.

Havent seen this one, but have seen stuff this stupid and heard just as much from others with similiar issues. Yes, computers make things much easier, but often they make it way worse, But you cant get anyone to own up to who is to blame for the error, each one blames it on another and it eventually is blamed to the computer. They are only as smart as the people typing into them. I rest my case. Great question and yes I have had a zero balance only to find out I owed more. I think we all have our stories.... You should have them return the check to you. I worked for a catalog company and that is what we did. We marked it as "void" for the customer(in case it got lost in the mail) and returned it to the customer.

Contact your bank with the details of the cheque and have it cancelled. That way it can never be used and you wont have to worry.
