One way that I define the difference is by illustrating it with a linked chain. A manager will try to push the chain. A true leader will get in front and pull it. Everyone knows that you can't successfully push a chain.

Management, usually by threats and intimidation, is really no longer an effective way to motivate associates. A leader will, as the word says, get up front and by example lead, encourage and involve his/her associates to achieve the mutual goal. Actually, giving the associates "ownership" in the goal.
