Your body starts to produce the hcg hormone as soon as the fertilize egg implants in your uterus lining. The hormone level doubles every 2-3 days. Implantation generally occurs anytime after day 18, but usually closer to your expected period. I read that most hpt's cannot detect an hcg level lower than 50, so if you take a test too early, you can get a false positive. I would wait until your period is supposed to start. If you don't start, then take an hpt. I would also advise to buy a 2 test pack because it's cheaper that way and if you get a negative response the first time, then wait a few days and test again.

Well I missed my period by 4 days and I tested the day of and 2 days after my missed period and they both come out negative but I spoke to a ob/gyn and she said that it is best to take it 10 days after your missed period and if its negative and you still haven't started your period or you still think your pregnant take it again 2 weeks after your missed period and if it still dont show up you need to come in because your hcg levels are just too low or something is wrong. My sister was two months pregnant before a pregnancy test would show positive for her.Good Luck.

from what i've read around 2 weeks past ovulation. If you had sex while ovulating, it could take up to a week for conception to happen.
The sperm has to fertilize the egg which could take a few days, then it has to implant which could take around a week. That's when it'll start producing HCG.
Then a quantitive blood (the MOST sensitive) could detect low levels of hcg soon after. There are some urine tests that advertise testing levels as low as 15 -25 mIU's.

On the pregnancy test you take once you're late for your period.

Generally the first peak of the HGC hormone is the one that causes your period to hault. Until that point the body doesnt usually produce enough to be detected on most pregnancy tests (the early ones are only 60% effective at detecting), and even some blood tests.

Until then the amount of the hormone is so diluted that its hard to detect :)

Within a week it could show up. With my last baby it was just a whimsical chance that i took an HGC test because I was always dropping things and that is what I do when I get pregnant. I had no idea or plan of being pregnant. Boy did I get a surprise.

Probably not until around the time that your period would normally come - maybe the end of the month? Your body needs time for the egg to implant and then the chemicals start their magic.

it won't show up till you miss your period or around the time your period is supposed to start. You can buy First Response that tell if you are pg 5 days before your period...
