Sounds like a lawn fungus call Smut. You may want to spray with a fungicide. I cannot say for sure without seeing though.

I tried to research you a link, but that search triggers the firewall at my work...they think I am trying to surf porn.

Sounds like you need to add some iron. It comes in liquid form and you can get it from Wal-Mart, Lowes or any garden center. I would also add some lime. You really need to do a soil test to figure it out. Your local extension service could help you.
