Earlier people could enroll into PhD programme straight from their Masters degree. These days they insist on an M Phil to do PhD. Why?

It depends on the college and their admission requirements into doctoroal programs. Not all colleges require a specialized degree to enter a particular program. You may want to try obtaining an online phd, where the requirements are not as strict in some cases.

I have never heard of the MPhil degree. I am studying for a PhD now, and I came straight into this program with an MA--some people even enroll in the program with only a bachelors. Maybe there is just something particular about the program you want to start.
