You say the machine heads are loose, do you mean the whole unit ? if so tighten the nut on the the string post at the front of the peg head, and the small screw at the back of the tuner(if there is one).
If the unit is loose mechanicaly (ie inside) buy new ones.
Grovers are the traditonal replacement on Gibson type guitars, but if you want to keep the guitar more original, you could buy Gibson tuners of the correct type for your intrument.

Are they held on with small screws? Do you mean they are set loose in the head or that they are releasing tension on the strings? If they are set loose then tighten the screws or get it done at a guitar shop. If they are releasing tension then I think you need a new set.

some play on the tuning key itself is ok, but if there is play on the post you have a problem (check this by slacking the string and trying to wiggle the part that the string winds around). Schaller and Grover are two excellent brands if you need a replacement set.

replace with grover tuners...keep the old ones though, just in case you sell the axe and someone wants the originals. keeping the loose ones on there will cause problems with keeping the guitar in tune and sustain

if your not sure yourself take ya guitar to someone who knows what they are doing. It's not a difficult job but if you **** it up it can be a costly problem. Failing that, don't be tight and buy a real Gibson! lol

You can tighten them, but just do it carefully, if you don't want to do that, you can replace them too.
