Here are the 10 best way to care for your computer:
1. Make sure you have an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) with surge protector to protect it from power surges and fluctuations in voltage supply.
2. Have the best Security protection program like McAfee to protect it from viruses, hackers, spams, etc.
3. Install a program that monitors and maintain the computer's system like System Mechanic.
4. Get a disk defragmenter to keep your hard drive in top shape like the Executive Software's Diskeeper.
5. Clean your computer regularly inside by using a soft camel brush and outside by using a damp towel.
6. Turn off the computer properly by using the system's shutdown program. Don't just pull the plug or switch it off.
7. Use a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) to ensure the a proper shutdown procedure during power outtages.
8. Always unplug the computer if not to be used for a long period of time.
9. Make sure that your computer is well ventilated. Install additional fans if necessary.
10. Minimize letting other people use your computer. They might not know this ways to care for it. Might as well give them a copy too.
There! I hope this helps.

good virus protection - AVG or Avast are free
spy-ware - Spysweeper
ad-ware - Ad-Aware
Virus protection always on - the others run at least once a week.
Occasionally open the case and clean out the dust.
Make sure your fans are working and cooling - this is important to keep the processor from overheating.
De-frag occasionally
A good surge protector is also a must have.

Don't download stuff from the internet unless it is a well respected site! I have co-workers to "click here" whenever they are told to! It's really sad.
Sorry. Venting.
But yes, be careful about what you put on your computer.
