It is driving my best friend and I nuts. I need to know why Janet Evanovich always capitalizes the word "Dumpster" in the Stephanie Pulm series? Does it have any significance? She deosn't capitolize big mac... Hurm!

Thank you for any help any of you can provide. I have Googled it over and over with no answer...

She's inconsistent. I read her too, but she's not always grammatically correct or consistent. Dumpster is capitalized because it is a proper noun. It's one of those words like Kleenex, which we use to mean any brand of tissue, or Xerox when we mean a cpoy. Not all garbage containers are Dumpsters. However, obviously Big Mac should be capitalized - even if the fries are being used as a hangover cure.

I really enjoy Evanovich. I haven't made it through the entire series...yet. But I'm actually in the middle of a Stephanie Plum novel now! It's a fresh breath from the typical detective novels. A no BS, but with a sense of wry humor, single woman working as a bounty hunter. What's not to love? And I really enjoy the Grandmother.

I've never noticed that. Have you tried sending a question to the author herself. Her website is evanovich.com Also if you like to read, as much as I do I have got a great website for you. It's called paperbackswap.com it's the best website I've ever found. You list books you've already read, you get 3 credits for listing your first 9 books. Those credits allow you to request a book from another member. Any book you want that is listed available in the system. The only thing you ever have to pay for is sending out the books requested from you, which is usually $1.59. There's so many really cool optional features that you can pay for if you choose, like box of books which allows you to save your credits and trade multiple books with the same person. They also offer discounted delivery confirmation when purchased through their site and it only costs an extra 14 cents postage. I have to warn you though, it's really addicting!! If you sign up, tell them Abbey sent you.

Because Dumpster is a brand name - just like Kleenex or Pampers. These names have come to be synonomous with garbage containers, tissue, and diapers. THere are more like that - a brand name is so popular that people use it to describe what the brand is. So you can have a dumpster that's not a Dumpster, just as you can have a kleenex that's not Kleenex. As a brand name, it gets capitolized.

I don't know how you Googled it and didn't find the answer. It's right here in the Wikipedia entry, about four down in the list when I searched it.

I don't know. What I do know is that Stephanie Plum remains an idiot in every book and never learns anything.
