Did you not like it just because you couldn't understand it?
If so, watch it again and pay attention.
For everyone else, there's a spoiler ahead so if you don't want to know what happens don't read the following:
Chronological order of events
2004
Alex finds the first note, telling him about the footsteps on the bridge.
Alex paints the bridge. Jack appears and creates paint footprints. Alex and Kate correspond.
Jack runs away. Alex abandons the lake house and gives the key to Morgan, so Kate can move in.
2006
Kate leaves the lake house and moves to Chicago, taking Jack with her, but she leaves the first note mentioning footprints and a box in the attic.
On Valentine's Day, Kate witnesses a man dying in a traffic accident at Daley Plaza. Though she is a doctor and on the scene within seconds, the man dies "in (her) arms," she later tells her lead doctor.
While visiting the lake house on a weekend, she finds a response letter.
Alex and Kate correspond.
Kate waits at the Il Mare, but Alex does not appear.
Kate tells Alex not to write to her anymore.
2007
Kate rekindles her relationship with Morgan.
2008
On Valentines Day, Kate and Morgan visit a newly formed architecture firm which includes Alex's brother, Henry. When Kate notices a sketch of the lake house, she asks Henry who made the sketch. He tells Kate that Alex did; she asks to speak to him, and Henry pauses and says sadly that Alex died two years ago on Valentine's Day. Kate asks where it happened
Kate rushes to the Lake House and its mailbox. She leaves a desperate message in the mailbox, telling Alex not to come to meet her at the Plaza, not cross the street and just wait. She waits at the lake house.
Weeping, Kate almost fails to notice the telltale turning-down of the mailbox flag. She stands, turns around, Alex appears in his pickup truck. As she says, "You waited," the movie ends.

I disagree with you and think it is one of the best love movies ever made, very tender and grounded in the aura of "what if". What if you had, at some time in your life, met your soulmate for a brief second, but nothing came of it? Then, by chance, years later, the next instance you came across this person was as he lay dying and you couldn't save him? Fate steps in, fate and belief in the power of supernatural elements, and connects you back to the past in order to make things right. The dog represents fate and that supernatural realm. What happened to Keanu isn't what necessarily happened the first time around, he wasn't the "kiss" on her birthday or anything that happened the second time around. The dog and the mailbox were the guide to make those paths cross again.
A lot of criticism came to the movie for the "disbelief" in the supernatural aspects, all of which made movies like "Ghost" possible. It was all a second change, a "what if". Best "what if" movies include Sliding Doors, Once Upon a Yesterday, and The Lakehouse.

It is the dog. Jack connects them. Jack was his dog up until he ran away and looked for her. That is when he first sees her, knowing she is the one for him. he doesn't tell her who he is because that would keep her from having ever written him in the first place. He does however find and rescue her book for her. When Jack runs away he runs to be with her. When she is sad after the he dies in the street, she takes Jack to a place she would be happy, the Lake house. That is where she decides to leave the first note. On both sides Jack is there. You should watch a Patrick Swayze Movie "Three Wishes" where a dog that looks like Jack is in fact a Genie. Anyway they are two years apart to begin with. He is in 2004 and she is in 2006. She wants to meet him after this point but in 2008 she send him a note saying don't show up until 2008 or he will die in 2006. He does what she says and in 2008 they meet at the Lake House. It all makes sense if you think about it. He didn't go to see her at the restaurant because she told him not to. She broke up with him because he didn't show up at the restaurant. He moved out of the Lake house because she broke up with him. She moves into the Lake House getting attached to it. She moves to the city where he had planted a tree for her. He builds a building that will allow her to get her book back. She finds out how he died and send the note that will save his life, and poof magically he appears. That is about it. It is all about the dog and what she was looking for when she went to the Lake House that day. She got her wish.

RE:
has anyone seen "The lake house" Can anyone explain what that was all about?
If you can explain this backwards movie to me I would greatly appreciate it. This had to be one of the worst movies that I've ever seen.

She somehow found out that the guy she tried saving was him. It happened to be that exact day 2 years ago (his time). So she went to the mailbox and wrote a letter hoping he would get it in time telling him not to go. He ended up getting the letter before he left, so he didn't go that day. Therefore, he never died... She left in the note that she would be at the house in two years (she was there right then). He waited 2 years and showed up. So even though she didn't have to wait, he got that letter 2 years ago, and waited for her. I dont know if that helps you out, it still sounds kinda confusing.

It is a love story that I loved. Kinda like "What if this happened only two years apart" In the end, she was meant to save his life and they were meant for each other. Neither responded to their feelings for each other when they met previously, so they get another chance. I liked it. You just have to let your imagination work for you. I guess my answer is that it was about a second chance. The dog seemed to be the connection.

well its kinda hard to explain it backwards....
but anyways...
Sanda and Keaunu's characters like 2 years apart, but in the same house. When she puts a letter in the mail box and puts the flag up he'll get it. If you remember her sitting with(i don't remember if it was a co-worker or her mom..it was a lady) and that guy died...that was him. she gets this project and here the one guy is his brother and its on February 14th(the day he died). She goes and writes him a letter saying not to go to her. and she ends up saving his life. Then she says to him to go to the lake house on this date and they finally meet face to face.
