Oh your first ultrasound, how exciting! A full bladder is supposed to make for a clearer picture but that's out dated now because they've updated their machines. You can't really do anything about the baby being awake or asleep but it doesn't matter, it'll be a wonderful experience anyway I promise.

You need to have a full bladder, your doc should have told you that. It is so that you can see the baby better on the ultrasound. Relax before and during the exam. If the baby's daddy is going too, have him talk softly, that is if he does that on a regular basis. Don't drink caffine, drink juice or eat fresh fruit for nature's sugar. Congrats.

If you drink caffine make sure it is only a small amount. I know that they tell you to drink lots of water. Make sure the water is ice cold. I had a sonogram at 20 weeks and she was wide awake. They wake up with the movements the dr makes.

You don't want to drink caffeine. Just go and be amazed at what is growing inside of you. Think of this as a lesson for the future, trust me, you won't be able to "make sure" of anything this little baby is going or not going to do for quite some time. Just go and enjoy. Congratulations.

Sugary foods like fruit. Sometimes the baby being awake and moving will make fuzzy ultrasound pictures.

Drink 32oz of water before your appointment. It makes a window for them to see through, and it also pushes your uterus up so that they can see better. If you don't drink enough water, they might have to do a vaginal, and you don't want that....I don't know about the caffeine thing, just try cold water, that should wake the baby up. at 20 wks though, you probably wont be able to tell the difference.....

Guess what...your baby is most active when you are not. They are lulled to sleep by your motion during the day and get fired up when you sit down for the evening. You'll notice this more when he or she is bigger and kicking your ribs!

Maybe caffiene works, but do you really want to drug your child just to see him or her "active"? Don't fret, it will be an amazing thing to see.

Either sugar or caffeine in moderation will perk your little one up. Take either about 30 minutes before your ultrasound so it will have time to reach your little one. Water consumption is also never a bad idea, although not necessary.
