the gasoline may be a year old however it still starts.......when i hit full throtle it wants to die as if its running out of gas

Are you saying that the gasoline in the trimmer is a year old?? If that is the case, then that is your problem. Old gas causes more trouble with small engines than anyone knows. It has a tendency to get sediment in it that clogs everything all up. Drain the gas and put new in...never try to use something with old gas in it....Also, you might have to clean up a few of the parts (carburetor., etc...) as they could be all gummed up.

try cleaning the exhaust port. it get pluged up like holding your hand over a exhaust pipe there is no where for the exhaust fumes to go so the engine fumes just backs up and stops the engine. also get rid of the old gas

check fuel filter
spark plug
replace old gas, put a stabilizer in it this time to go thru the winter storage or drain it

check fuel filter, line etc. sounds like it is starved for fuel.
