This happened in a recent chargers vs. 49ers game between Phillip Rivers and Ladainian Tomlinson, LT was credited with a run. I figured it as a pass.

A lateral is counted as a run, not a pass. A backward pass, even if thrown overhand, is still considered a lateral. And instead of crediting the runner with yards from scrimmage, it credits him with yards from the point of the catch. So in a way it pads their stats a couple of yards every time.

If it is thrown behind the QB than it is considered a run because the ball isn't moving forward. That is why if the receiver drops the pass it is considered a fumble, not an incomplete pass.

No, if it travels parallel to the line of scrimmage or behind the line, it is a fumble in flight. when LT gained possesion of it, he became a runner. If he had made a legal attempt to pass after catching the fumble, he would've been afforded the same protection as any QB by rule.

Counts as a run...any time the ball is passed behind the QB it's a run...laterally or infront of him is a pass

Anything that goes backwards is considered a lateral, and a run. By definition, a pass can either be caught, or incomplete. A backward pass can be considered a fumble if not caught, so it isn't truly a pass.

Only a forward pass counts as a pass and reception. Tosses, pitches, and lateral passes are all considered runs. This includes the flea-flicker.

run. forward pass must be forward or at least even to HORZ to
each other.
Any play backwards including a pass backwards is a running play. and that means the back can then pass or hand off for old flea flicker forward pass.

If it is backwards it is a lateral and thus not a pass. If the guy drops the ball it would be a fumble.

If he's even with or behind the QB, its a run. If he's at all in front, they call it a pass.
