I have a 2 year old son. We bought him an Amby Baby Hammock from www.ambybaby.com. It cradles them, has snuggle cuddlers to keep them from rolling side to side, and keeps them in a semi upright position to help prevent chocking on spit up. This was a great relief to me, and the hammocks aren't especially expensive. You can find them on ebay also, or sell your used one there. People are always looking for them.

My daughter is 2 months old, and she has an Amby as well.

The 2 issues you mentioned is why we used a wedge to put our daughter on her side. We figured we'd avoid suffocation from the belly sleeping and chocking on spit-up from the back sleeping. The only problem we had was it seemed she preferred to sleep on one side more than the other. We thought nothing about it except let her do what she prefers. At her 2 month visit we discovered that this had given her a flat spot on her preferred side (which is why she preferred it). By then it was just about too late to fix it by alternating sides because she could move pretty good by then. Nobody told us about getting flat spots...

all babies should sleep on their back, because of SIDS. But it is ok for them to sleep on their belly once they can hold their head a bit and are able to move it from side to side while on their tummy.
Just for naps though and with you keeping an eye on the baby. My two month old takes one nap a day on his tummy and enjoys it. I find he sleeps a little longer too. not just on his back all the time.

Back to sleep and in my opinion all those sleeping bumper items and wedges are a waste of money. My baby slept on his back with none of those sleeping accessories and had no problems!

Congrats and enjoy every minute!

ALL current literature says to place your baby on their back when sleeping to reduce the risk of SIDS. This is the only way Dr's say to do it now. You should let your baby digest a little sitting up (if s/he didnt fall asleep while nursing that is, mine always did!) before you put them to bed, but I dont think there is any risk of them choking.

I was told by doctors and public health nurse to put them to sleep on their backs...i was really nervous about my daughter choking on spit up and what not...but it must be an instinct for them because whenever my baby spit up when lying on her back, she always turned her head to the side...now almost 6 months old...no problems. Good luck!!

The majority of sources told us they should sleep on their back. Our nurse in the hospital said slightly on their side is fine when they're really little, but when they get old enough to roll at all, they should be on their backs. We used the little wedge with small velcro sides (probably the same one you registered for) and it worked great.

Give your little one lots & lots of tummy time to compensate for sleeping on his or her back. It really makes them stronger and quicker to crawl & walk (our son walked at 10 months!)

Teh anti SIDs campaign says "back to sleep".

Babies must sleep on their back. Or, if you have the wedges, you can put them so theyre a little more on their side than back.

They are supposed to sleep on their backs, but my son loved his tummy sleep. I would let him nap on his tummy when I could watch him and even let him fall asleep on his tummy at night, but I would turn him to back before I went to bed. As he got older and learned to roll over he would always roll on his tummy to sleep. I was told by my doctor that this was okay since he was able to roll. He's 10 months now and healthy!

The doctors say the baby needs to sleep on ther back. Most baby's aren't too comfortable on there backs, so you could lay them on there side instead. sleeping on there side isn't as safe as sleeping on there backs, but its safer then on there stomachs.
