You're going to have to figure out what's most important to you, because you're not going to always find accomodation that is simultaneously easy, safe, cheapest, and not garbage. Your best bet is camping in national and state parks, but then you'll need a car to get to most of them, so there goes the money you're saving on accomodation to pay for renting a car.
I like the hostel idea, but there aren't many good ones in North America. Inexpensive hotel deals are probably a better bet, especially if you will share a room. Roomsaver is a good source. Microtel, Red Roof, Motel 6, and Super 8 are budget chains; quality among them can vary a lot, as can location (seedy parts of town, sometimes).
Getting around: bus. Greyhound is your friend. In midwest USA, a new company called Megabus has some rides for $1.50. On some long distances, flight hops with Airtran, Southwest, or JetBlue might be cheaper.

Barclays do a travel card. Its like a debit card that you put money onto whilst in the u.k then it works as a Visa card overseas. It prevents the risk of losing cash, but has the usability of a Visa credit card without the overseas charges. But also, the Post Office credit card dont charge for overseas purchases.

Hi Vinnie,
Try my way .. hire a goodly motorbike, and a tent with a bit of equipment.
Job done. Great fun to be had, and there are always good eating/drinking places at a modest price, and lovely places to rest at night.
Cheap and very cheerful.
Bob.

some years ago, i purchased a Greyhound bus pass for 2wks travel as i please, it cost me $100 or something, i cant quite remember, but i hopped on and off as i pleased and travelled NYC, DC, canada, Philly.
i stayed in bus stations, beaches or very cheap and nasty hostels.
The experience was unforgettable, as u can imagine, as i was by myself, and to do they crazy things i did when i was barely 18, and i dnno if id do it again.
But i'm still here. Greyhound buses is the best way to get from A to B thou.
good luck.
for reference, i am from Scotland, so it was atotally different culture for me.

try student hostels. They are inexpensive, clean, and you can meet people from lots of other countries, thereby learning about them and their countries, customs, etc.
