Because, "Love for any time at all is worth the price we pay to fall". Take a chance, live a little. It would be a pretty boring & LONELY life if we all stayed in our safe shells. OUr hearts & souls are more resilient than people give them credit for. REALLY, you'll be OK! Try it, you'll like it. :)

Because if yuo refuse to risk yourself emotionally, you're part of the 99% who are out for number one. You question makes it sound as if you find this a problem. So by your own definition, you are becoming part of the problem. The reason for you to develop close relationships is to part of a solution to something that you seem to percieve as a problem.

You have to be very careful and discern who is for real and who is not. There are still some wonderful honest people out there who are not just living for themselves. They are hard to find but they are out there. But finding them is like a needle in a haystack. I don't like to take risks either, but as you get older you take less risks and you can tell who is for real and who is not. Experience and age seems to be the key to this secret. Good luck!

If you never take a risk then you will never have the chance to have a close friend that is not selfish. Life is all about taking risks.

If 99% of people were only looking out for themselves, it would be of the utmost importance to form close relationships with them, that they might all begin to look out for others, after seeing your example of looking out for them.

I think the problem is the statement , "develop close relationship" with this idea you are forcing yourself, you are just reacting, it is not an original action. If you truly see that our mind is enclosed (selfish),hypocrites and this is not the true way of living harmoniously, then you will just dissolve your enclosure (selfishness) and live the true life of no fear of being vulnerable. You cannot find true security in enclosed or hypocrite mind. True life is the true security.

Actually most people think of themselves first and those who don't should!

This doesn't mean that we're not able to interact or help others. Any kind of relationship will need to give advantages to all parties for it to be maintained.
