HP servers are very very sensitive to having specific RAM installed. First of all, it is most likely ECC ram (meaning that it has error correction ability). No modern home PC's that I know of use this type of memory.

Secondly, HP servers require memory with a specific "timing" range. This is why third party memory if never used on high end servers. Proprietary RAM modules are individually tested for compatibility.

I'm not telling you that the server will necessarily fail to boot if you install desktop RAM in it.....however it will most likely crash more often and generate more errors.

Find the "Model/Type" of the DL380 in question & look up the actual specs on HP's web site. They will tell you everything you need to know including what processors are supported.

Crucial.com recommends a minimum memory total of at least 512MB. And since your HP - Compaq ProLiant DL380 supports up to 4096MB of memory, you may want to install even more, especially if you work with several programs at a time or use memory-intensive software, such as image-editing software.

Memory isn't the processor. They are DIMMS. It uses an earlier kind of memory called SDRAM, commonly used before DDR & DDR2 was introduced.

They have a memory tool on their website page called Crucial Memory Advisor™ Tool to pick the correct kind of memory for your system. The model is ProLiant for the DL380
