I'm from the East Coast and I'm visiting L.A. in early January and want to spend a few days skiing (or snowboarding). I would make a detour to some place on the way back.

GO TO UTAH!!! "Best snow on earth!" Trust me! Ogden Valley is awesome! Not crowded AT ALL! In Ogden Valley there are these resorts: (Just so you know, they aren't just ski resorts, snoboarders are allowed, in case you have a vengance.) Snowbasin, this one is most expensive. Wolf Mountain (formally known as Nordic Valley) which is good for beginners, because it's not big, so you can't get lost, and not too steep. My favorite is Powder Mountain! Especially the Sundown part, because of the terrain park. There are sooo many good runs at Powder Mountain, good terrain park, and best snow in the valley...and the world! Just make sure you order cheese fries when you're up there! :D

Personally, I'd say Denver, but quite frankly, all three places over stupendous skiing/snowboarding... my home mountain is Whiteface (Lake Placid, NY), but "left" coast skiing is just awesome.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It's a little tricky to get to, and a little expensive, but the skiing is unmatched in the lower 48.

Utah has the best snow. I,ve been to denver too, and their snow is kinda crummy. If your going to LA, you should go to lake tahoe. I've always wanted to go there.
