If you trust them, that should be enough, and the other people have no right to spread slander. have you checked their stories though? it could be that the other people are correct: see what foundation their gossip is based on, and maybe ask your new friends why there is this speculation about them from others. it all comes down to whether you trust them, which you might not discover until you know them better. but don't be biased by other people's opinions: you have the right to choose your own friends based on your own feelings. i hope it works out!

If you really like these people stay around them. Find out for yourself if they are the people you thought they were. Don't let other people control who you hang out with find out on your own, and if they are scum or whatever else they were called it's you decision weather or not to hang out with them. After all it is you life right?.

It doesnt say an awful lot about them im afraid. People obviuosly know what they are like already, and apparently you dont, so if you dont like what other people are saying and you believe this to be true, then I would get out of the group, if made friends once then you can make some more.

I think the best thing to do would be to ask your friends why people say these things - they obviously aren't the most popular of people. If your friends give you an honest answer then I suppose you should just decide who you trust, good luck with that.

it only says that you do not know much about them. and that you have to see and listen for yourself if what the people are saying is true or not it is just a matter of finding out for yourself the personalities of your new friends, its not going to be easy but it will keep you from getting called names that you do not like.
i've been there and trust me when i say that i dump that new friend of mine because what people told me about her was true so its all up to you to decide good luck

If a few people are saying this then you need to wake up and smell the bad cheese.
If it was the odd one then maybe you could let it go but if it a regular thing you need to investigate a little before giving them the push.

It may say more about the people who call them scum that it does about your new friends.
You should trust your own judgement and if you like these guys and you don't think they're doing anything wrong, stick with them

They are jealous and are ignorant for not wanting to diversify themselves (with your friends)
If your friends that you have not seen in a long time are bad influences than I could sorta understand other than that I think that they are immature and selfish & probably wants you for themselves
Also, It depends on type of personalities that your new friends have
Do they do mischeivous and illegal things?

Well, I'd have to get to know both sets of friends before I can make a solid judgment. At a glace, though, the word " prejudice " comes to mind.
