I'm making directions for someone and I want to be able to say click on the tree icon but instead of saying tree icon I'd like to be able to put the graphic of that icon in my file so when they read my directions they will have a pict of the icon to be looking for. How do I do that?

You can use a paint program that captures the screen. I use Paint Shop Pro and it has a feature you can capture the screen with. You highlight the area you wish to save into a file. You can resize it and do whatever you wish with it once you have it within the program.

There's an easy way in XP you can get the icon you need into your document. It shouldn't matter which program you want to get the icon into, this should work.

First of all, go to the screen that has the icon and press the "Print Screen" or "Prn Scr" key on your keyboard, found near the top-right. This copies everything on the screen into the clipboard for use in a moment.

Assuming you've got a normal installation of Windows XP, you should be able to now to to the Start menu > Programs > Accessories > Paint. This will run Microsoft Paint which is installed with Windows XP by default.

In Paint, press CTRL+V to paste in the contents of the clipboard. Paint will probably prompt to ask you if you want to enlarge the bitmap or some such similar message - click Yes, and it'll paste in the contents of the screen.

Now, you can use one of the tools on the left to select your icon. You will already have the whole image selected by default, but you don't want that. Click the little dashed star tool, then back onto the dashed rectangle tool. This will clear the selection, and you can now drag a rectangle round your icon.

When you've done that, click CTRL+C to copy this new icon selection to the clipboard. You can now go to your application and click CTRL+V to paste your icon in.

Hope that helps!

If the picture is on a web page, you can do what the another Answerer wrote regarding the right-click & 'Save As' technique.

If the picture is displayed in a Windows program, you can press the 'Print Scrn' key to copy the whole program window to the Windows clipboard. Then you run a picture editor program (like Paint) and paste the picture of the window into the program. Then you can edit the picture to only save the section of the window that you want saved.

Windows Paint isn't a good program.
Below is a link to a free picture editor that is much better. Download the Paint.net program that includes the .NET framework 2.0 part.

Another free one would be a program called GIMP.

Simply right-click on the icon, choose "Save As..." and pick a location and name for it. This image is then saved to your computer so that you can insert it into your word processing program.

Hope this helps :)
