Courses of study leading to a degree usually have to be organized and presented by an accredited school. An Associate in arts or Associate in Science requires a certain number of hours of class time, including course in general education as well as the specific subject matter. Try comparing the courses at the Associates school with the courses at a school that does not give a degree. I think it is always better to get a degree than not. You will be more respected, and if you want to go back to school to reach a higher level later, your credits will count toward the next degree.

by the way, as usual there are some answers which are clearly wrong.... Nurses DO have degrees -starting with associates, all the way through Bachelor of Nursing Science, Masters in Nursing, and Doctor of Science in Nursing.

That depends on what you consider a "normal job." Generally a bachelor`s is what is considered a college degree and is much more respected than an associates.

Because some fields don't have degrees. Nursing doesn't have a degree, just levels of knowledge, hence 'diploma' or level of accomplishment.

Degrees are reserved for science.
