I have read all the answers and most were really good. There are a few things you can do to make things better. When you first turn your computer on, don't touch any buttons until everything has loaded and all is still. Go to tools then Internet options and remove temporary cookies and files.
Then from All Programs, select Accessories, Systems Tools, and then do Disk Clean Up and come back the same way and do Disk Defragmenter.
You should also do a Windows update if you are using Windows and make sure your virus protection is up to date.
One more place to look is the systems tray in the bottom right of you screen. There may be some programs running that you don't need. You can temporally remove some, not all, of these programs by using a right click and click close or something like that. If you decide a program is really not needed you can delete it from the start menu under All Programs. The ones you removed temporally will come back again when you start the computer again.
Almost done now. The last thing to do is a check of your hard drive with a scan disk under systems tools. This will take some time, but it will check the surface of your hard drive.
The last thing is to make sure you are not near a TV set which could also cause a problem.

It could be what the other Answerers wrote about overheating and a possible virus/trojan problem. I'll just try something else.
Have you installed any drivers or updated anything recently? That could be the problem.
Has your computer crashed before you got the chronic Windows crashes? Then maybe some registry entries or some files were damaged.
You can try using the System Restore program. This program backs up the registry and saves some system files when you install an application on your computer. Using System Restore, you can go back to that restore point if the application or driver screwed up your computer. Any changes with System Restore can be reversed, so it's okay to use it. System Restore can be accessed by clicking the Start button and then look in the Programs|Accessories|System Tools menu.
Read the help information before using that program.

Anna, I've never had a computer that didn't seize up at some time during my ownership. Some more than others. There are a hundred possibilities and no way to diagnose it after the fact.
Maybe you had bunches of windows open or several programs running that just ate up resources. Sometimes the computer gets overwhelmed with commands that your keyboard and mouse freeze up temporarily while the computer executes the commands. Sometimes, there are just 2 programs that don't coexist.
Be aware of what you are running and how much you are loading into the job queue.
In conclusion, make sure you eliminate the possible causes and make sure you have good ventilation.

Lock ups are usually caused by a driver conflicts.
Right click on your MyComputer icon and select Properties. Then click the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button. If you have a device with a yellow triangle, then you need to figure out why. Right click on the device with the yellow triangle and select properties and it will say what the problem is.
Did you install anything before it started freezing up? If so you may want to uninstall that program.
If none of this is the case, then I suggest you take it to a place like BestBuy and have them look at it.

There may be too many programs running at the same time draining the system resources. You did not mention the exact configuration of your laptop. Also when it gets stuck instead of restarting it Ctrl-Alt-Del and go to task manager and see what application is not responding. You can end that particular application and then perhaps your system would work.
And try deleting unwanted software that you dont use. Thats what i do. Best of luck

This lock up can be caused by usually two things either software or hardare.
You need to download SPybot 1.4 and Adaware 1.6 from Download.com
Those will help with the software end of things. IF you can track how much time yur laptop is on before it locks up fot he first time. Let is sit and try again. If it locks up with in 5 or 10 minutes of the same time from before it is a heat issue and you need to have the cooling system in your laptop checked.

Try defragmenting, if that does not work clean out your heat sink with some compressed air. Those dust bunnies will get in your heat sink, cause your cpu to get hot and wreak havoc on your system. It will only get worse and do more damage if you do not clean it out soon. The hard drive could completley crash soon. If you have had this laptop for a few years and do not have a good air purifier or dust filtration system in your house this could be the culprit.

Have you tried doing a spyware cleanup, or a defrag on it? Virus scan alone is not going to be all that helpful. If you dont have a spyware program, go to the following link and download this one if you can, http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=topic
You really need to do that clean up as well as a defrag. You might also want to go into your control panel and remove any old and unused programs to free up some space.
Good luck.
